Why Is Continuing Education Required?
To maintain professional competency, cosmetologists must obtain six hours of continuing education every year. Instructors must obtain a minimum of fifteen hours of continuing education each year.
Who Is Required To Take Continuing Education Classes?
During the 2006 legislative session, the SC General Assembly passed a law allowing certain individuals to be exempt from continuing education requirements. To qualify for these exemptions, all licensees must meet one of the following requirements:
BE AT LEAST 50 YEARS OLD, CONTINUOUSLY LICENSED
EVERY YEAR SINCE 1976 AND NEVER DISCIPLINED BY
THE BOARD

OR

BE AT LEAST 60 YEARS OLD, CONTINUOUSLY LICENSED
EVERY YEAR SINCE 1991 AND NEVER DISCIPLINED
BY THE BOARD

If you do not qualify for the CE exemption, you will be asked if you have completed the CE requirements for renewal of your license. If you answer YES, you may later be required to provide proof. Please understand that if you falsify the renewal application, you may face disciplinary action by the Board up to and including revocation of your license.
